A ‘tidy’ garden may be pleasing to the human eye, but it provides virtually no food or shelter for animals. Therefore, when gardening in the fall, be careful not to clear piles of leaves and undergrowth. Hedgehogs in particular need this as a shelter. “The hedgehog likes to hibernate under piles of wood and other protected refuges,” explains Bärbel Meißnitzer from the hedgehog care center Millstatt.
