Dedicated to the Muses – Visit to the mosaic school: how stone images are made

Date:

They are known from antiquity and from early Christian churches such as in Teurnia near Spittal in Carinthia: beautiful works of art made of small stones. Why the famous mosaic school in Spilimbergo, Italy, is located near the Tagliamento, why crookedness is often desired and what the Muses have to do with it.

From Australia, Korea, the US and from 13 countries around the world, students between the ages of 18 and 40 usually sit in the classrooms and crush stones with the mosaic hammer on the metal nail stuck in a tree trunk. With the resulting tesserae, with the stones, they practice the ancient art of mosaics. When visiting the “Krone”, the 50 students have a day off, but Simonetta De Paoli leads the Carinthian trio Helene, Christina and Siegfried through the classes.
