Christian B., who is also a suspect in the Maddie case, was acquitted of several serious sexual offenses by the Braunschweig Regional Court. The 47-year-old remains in prison as he serves a sentence for rape until September 2025.
After a 38-day trial before the criminal chamber in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, the three professional judges and two lay judges acquitted the suspect.
Many trial observers had expected this outcome after the chamber withdrew the arrest warrant against the convicted sex offender in July at the request of the defense.
At the start of the trial in February, Christian B. was charged with three counts of rape and two counts of child sexual abuse in Portugal.
After the evidence was gathered, the prosecution essentially stood by his conviction, seeking a total of fifteen years in prison, followed by preventive detention.
Defendant made no comment
Prosecutors ultimately found him guilty of two counts of rape and two counts of abuse. The defendant was given the opportunity to speak a final word on the penultimate day of the trial, but made no comment. The verdict is not final and an appeal is possible.
