An imam has been deported from Italy for glorifying the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi signed a decree expelling Pakistan’s Zulfiqar Khan (photo below) from the territory “for reasons of state security” after reports that the imam had spoken out in favor of Hamas.
Lega leader and Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini welcomed the deportation. “We finally sent him home!” said Salvini. The imam’s lawyer spoke of a ‘return to a police state’.
Meloni complains about “widespread anti-Semitism”
On Monday, the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023 was also commemorated in Italy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni complained about “hidden and widespread anti-Semitism” during a visit to the synagogue. “Unfortunately, the public demonstrations in recent days have confirmed this,” the head of government said, referring to Saturday’s unauthorized pro-Palestinian demonstration in Rome, which resulted in riots that injured 34 people.
