“Headless organization” – Israel: Nasrallah’s successor presumed dead

Date:

The most promising successor to slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has apparently also been eliminated by Israel. Defense Secretary Yoav Gallant said from his office on Tuesday: “Hezbollah is a headless organization – Nasrallah has been eliminated, and his successor has probably been eliminated as well.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed the same sentiment in a video address Tuesday evening, saying his military had “eliminated thousands of terrorists, including Nasrallah himself and Nasrallah’s successor and his successor’s successor.” Neither Gallant nor Netanyahu mentioned Hashem Safieddine’s name.

The news channel Al-Jazeera reported a few days ago that Hezbollah had lost contact with Safieddine. Hezbollah dismissed the reports as false.

The senior leader of Hezbollah was reportedly the target of a large-scale Israeli bombardment of the Lebanese capital Beirut last week. He is a cousin of the slain Nasrallah and is said to have good ties with Iran. Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said the military was still investigating the results of the attack on Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in Beirut, where Safieddine is believed to have been staying. Nasrallah himself was killed in an airstrike at the end of September.

Hezbollah tunnel to Israel destroyed
Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem, who temporarily led the militia after Nasrallah’s killing, said in a televised address that while the Israeli attacks had been “painful,” Hezbollah remained “perfectly organized” and its capabilities remained “good.”

At the same time, the Israeli military announced that a Hezbollah tunnel discovered months earlier that reached into Israeli territory had now been destroyed. The tunnel is said to be part of a plan by the Iranian-backed militia to infiltrate Israel and kill and kidnap people there.
