A student at the University of Bristol had a shocking moment when she discovered a live scorpion in her Shein parcel instead of the shoes she was expecting. 18-year-old Sofia Alonso-Mossinger initially thought the animal was a toy, but then it moved – and the situation suddenly became serious.
“It was quite scary,” she told the BBC. “I thought it was a toy, but then it moved.” With the help of her roommates, she was finally able to put the poisonous scorpion in a bathtub before an expert picked it up. The situation was especially unnerving for housemate Oliver James, who is studying zoology and used kitchen tongs to put the dangerous animal in a plastic container.
Never expected something like this
Despite her roommate’s quick response, the incident came as a shock to Alonso-Mossinger: “I thought I was dreaming – a scorpion in my room was the last thing I expected.”
The BBC shared a video of the grisly find on Twitter
Already the second find
The incident caused an uproar and led to discussions about safety standards for international deliveries. An official at the National Center for Reptile Welfare, which collected the animal, said this was the second discovery of a Chinese scorpion in less than a month.
“Potentially life-threatening”
The bite was “medically significant… potentially life-threatening, but the average adult would just be having a really bad day.” Fortunately, the student escaped without fear.
Chinese fashion company Shein said it conducted an internal investigation and that all standard procedures were followed, meaning everything was done correctly.
