A Tuesday afternoon climbing tour in Mödling (Lower Austria) came to a dramatic end. An approximately 25-year-old fell into the deep. The alpine police, the mountain rescue and the team of the ÖAMTC emergency doctor helicopter Christophorus 3 were involved in the complex rescue operation.
It should have been a beautiful afternoon among mountaineers and almost ended in disaster. A group of mountaineers climbed into a wall “In der Klausen” in Mödling. For an initially unknown reason, a 25-year-old member of the group suddenly fell over. His comrades sounded the alarm on their mobile phones and set in motion a perfect rescue chain.
Four members of the Lower Austria Mountain Rescue Service (local office in Vienna Forest South) were the first to help at the scene of the emergency. “The colleagues provided the injured person with first aid and secured him against another fall,” ÖAMTC spokesman Ralph Schüller told Krone. Shortly afterwards, two alpine police officers also arrived.

Due to the difficult overall situation – according to “Krone” information, the seriously injured person walked over a fine line and also had to be secured against another fall – it was decided to request a helicopter for the rescue. A few minutes later, the ÖAMTC emergency doctor helicopter Christophorus 3, stationed in Wiener Neustadt, set course for Mödling.
The pilot landed the flying intensive care unit at the Meiereiwiese. “Then our team prepared everything for a dew rescue,” says Schüller, who explains the crew’s further procedure. The A&E doctor and rescuer were flown to the injured person who was hanging from the rope outside the helicopter and further cared for there.

After about 40 minutes, the fallen climber could finally be flown out of sight to the intermediate landing site on the rope. There the man received his last care. With the help of two dedicated walkers, the patient was loaded onto the Christophorus 3 and eventually flown to Wiener Neustadt Hospital for further treatment.
