About 12,000 people demonstrated in the streets of Madrid this Sunday to demand a reduction in rents, both in the capital and in the rest of Spain, the government delegation in Madrid said.
According to real estate portal ‘Idealista’, the rental price in Madrid has increased by 15.7% since September 2023.
Among the organizers of the march were platforms such as Affected by Metro Line 7B, Affected by Public and Social Housing (PAVPS) and Affected by Mortgages (PAH). Nearly forty associations, left-wing political parties and civil society attended the march under the slogan ‘Housing is a right, not a business’ and ‘It’s over’. Let’s lower rents.’
However, no members of any Spanish government were present, from the state to the regional governments of the Community of Madrid and the capital.
The Madrid Tenants’ Union has threatened to go on strike and stop paying rent if prices continue to rise. With this they want to reduce rents by 50%. To do this, they ask that the action be repeated in all neighborhoods of Spain, starting from Monday, October 14.
For her part, the general secretary of CCOO Madrid, Paloma López Bermejo, has asked the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, to regulate the tourist apartments in the region.
