Israel claims: – Hezbollah weapons depot near UN bases

Date:

She shoots at bases of the UN mission UNIFIL, wounding peacekeepers and even forcibly breaching a gateway. Israel believes that the internationally highly controversial actions in Lebanon are justified: positions and weapons depots of the pro-Iranian militia Hezbollah are said to be in the immediate vicinity of the UN troops.

The Israeli military said on Sunday evening that about 25 rockets were fired at Israeli communities and troops from Hezbollah positions near UNIFIL posts last month. Two soldiers were killed in one of these attacks.

In the course of ground operations, the IDF says it encountered underground weapons depots that were reportedly only “a few dozen to a few hundred meters” from UNIFIL posts. Over the years, Hezbollah has deliberately built up its attack infrastructure near UN peacekeeping positions.

Israel insists on UNIFIL’s relocation
After UN peacekeepers were shot at during clashes between Israeli soldiers and Hezbollah, UN Secretary General António Guterres urged restraint. UNIFIL troops and posts should never be targeted, he said through a spokesman. Responding to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s call to withdraw UNIFIL troops from combat zones in southern Lebanon, Guterres said the peacekeeping force would remain at its bases there.

UNIFIL’s job is to monitor compliance with the ceasefire following the 2006 Lebanon War. The force of more than 10,000 UN soldiers is armed, but does not have a so-called robust mandate – which means that it can actually only use it for self-defense.
