If you suspect Covid-19, high-risk patients should immediately go to their GP to have a free test carried out, says Viennese pulmonologist Arshang Valipour. Only a rapid diagnosis can guarantee timely treatment with the antiviral drug Paxlovir.
The Ministry of Health has stated: “Treatment with Covid-19 drugs is primarily intended for high-risk patients.”
This mainly affects the following people:
- People at an older age, people with chronic diseases (for example diabetes), overweight people and people with diseases or people who use medications that affect the immune system.
- Social Security has defined a body mass index (BMI) over 30, age over 60, oncological diseases, etc. as risk factors.
A prerequisite for possible medical treatment of a SARS-CoV-2 infection is a free corona test with a positive result, carried out by the attending physician.
People at increased risk due to an infection are urgently advised to respond quickly. There is only a relatively short period of time available before treatment with Paxlovid has a good effect.
