“Challenges” – Water supply: EU agency warns of shortages

Date:

The EU Environment Agency EEA is sounding the alarm: Europe urgently needs to increase its resilience and ensure a sustainable freshwater supply for people and the environment. Because the water supply faces major challenges.

According to a new EEA report, only 37 percent of so-called surface water bodies – such as lakes or rivers – in Europe were in good or very good status in 2021. 20 percent of European land and 30 percent of the population are already affected every year by so-called water stress due to water shortages and long periods of drought. Pollution and wasteful use are also harmful factors.

Call for sustainable flood risk management
At the same time, heavy rainfall has already increased in parts of Europe, leading to flooding and increasing flood risks. With climate change in Europe, affordable and sustainable flood risk management is becoming increasingly important, experts say.

“The condition of European waters is not good. Our waters are facing unprecedented challenges that threaten Europe’s safe water supply. We must redouble our efforts to restore the health of our precious rivers, lakes, coastal waters and other water bodies and ensure that this vital resource remains resilient and secure for generations to come,” emphasizes Leena Ylä-Mononen, Executive Director of the EEA .
