Within a few days, a gang of burglars in Vienna’s third district cut the locks on at least five apartments and stole money, gold and jewelry. As memories of an unprecedented series of crimes from 2022 and 2023 surface, police are on the trail of the perpetrators.
The Viennese police and professional fire brigade received a warning on Wednesday afternoon in Landstraßer Keinergasse, which is no longer so unusual. Burglars had ‘dropped’ the door locks of several apartments with corrosive and poisonous nitric acid, causing them to dissolve. Two apartments were broken into. The emergency services now know the procedure – and are careful because of the dangerous acid.
Vienna, Stockholm – and more Vienna
The still unknown people struck in August on Schüttelstrasse in Leopoldstadt, which borders the third district, and took large loot from two apartments in a house. In the third district, two apartments were hit on Oberzellergasse. Afterwards, peace returned (for the time being), while more nitric acid burglaries were reported in Stockholm, Sweden.
Two crime scenes in a few days
Now it started again in Vienna: last Sunday the police sounded the alarm in Wassergasse – according to information from “Krone” three apartments were “dropped” there with the dangerous acid. Two tenants or owners of apartments in Keinergasse are currently dealing with clean-up operations after burglaries. The procedure is a familiar pattern for the Viennese police.
Unprecedented series in 2022 and 2023
There were at least 55 apartments built by a group of Georgians across Vienna in 2022 and 2023, along with hundreds of others in half of Europe. At that point, most perpetrators were caught. The perpetrators may also have moved into rental apartments at the time. The police and the Federal Criminal Police are investigating at full speed – the noose for the burglars is getting tighter.
Liquid on the door – call the police!
If you notice liquid on your apartment door in the lock room, please contact the police emergency number immediately. If you have already come into contact with the liquid, do not touch your eyes and wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap. Nitric acid and its vapors can cause serious external and internal burns.
