This actually unspectacular accident on Taborstrasse in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt at the beginning of June is quite something: not because the perpetrator was a police officer, but because it is surprising how the law enforcement officer behaved after the collision with an oncoming vehicle.
Witness took a photo of the license plate
After a brief stop, the 36-year-old left the scene of the accident without rendering any assistance to the slightly injured driver of the second car and without informing the police. Because a witness took a photo, the owner of the permit was quickly identified. Officers found the colleague in his apartment, where they smelled a clear odor of alcohol. There, the police officer refused to take an alcohol test and claimed that his car keys had been stolen. He provided no information about the whereabouts of the car.
As it turned out, the driver of the accident parked the damaged car in front of a rescue station. The car blocked the exit there, obstructed an emergency vehicle and had to be towed away.
Apologies to the victim
During his trial at the Leopoldstadt District Court for negligent bodily harm and abandonment of an injured person, the man contritely confessed: “I can’t explain it to myself. But I know that that day I did everything wrong that a person can do wrong,” he says and apologizes to the victim.
As the ‘Krown’ learned from police circles, the driver of the accident got away with a fine in court, which his lawyer Mirsad Musliu confirmed when asked: “The fine imposed amounts to 3,360 euros and is already legally binding.”
The cause is not yet completely over
But for the officer, the unpleasant issue is not over yet. In addition to having his driver’s license confiscated, the man will likely undergo disciplinary proceedings.
