An employee at Palma de Mallorca Airport was hit and seriously injured by the exhaust jet of a landed Boeing 757-300. Although the incident took place two months ago, it has only now come to light.
According to a statement from the Spanish Ministry of Transport, the passenger plane arrived in Palma from Dusseldorf on August 24. The aircraft then parked in its assigned slot. For unknown reasons, the ground team coordinator approached one of the engines and received the exhaust jet. At that time there were still 266 passengers and eight crew members on board.
The worker was thrown to the ground. The man suffered serious injuries. It was not reported how the man is doing today. The incident is under investigation, it was announced on Saturday.
Running aircraft engines pose a great danger
It is particularly dangerous to approach a running aircraft engine from the front as there is a fatal risk of being sucked in. But caution is also required behind the engine, because the strong jet of exhaust fumes can knock someone over.
