According to the union, a fundamental agreement has been reached in the weeks-long collective labor agreement dispute at the American aircraft manufacturer Boeing. Trade union IAM said on Saturday on X that the offer now being negotiated was “worth considering”. The offer will be put to a vote by the staff next Wednesday.
The ailing aircraft manufacturer now offers, among other things, an income increase of 35 percent over a period of four years. The union said the new offer was negotiated with the support of U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su.
Additional one-time payment of $7,000
The proposal also provides for a one-off payment of $7,000 (about 6,400 euros) – as well as the receipt of bonus payments that were originally intended to be abolished.
33,000 employees stopped working
The strike at Boeing in the Pacific Northwest region around the American metropolis of Seattle began on September 13 and approximately 33,000 employees walked off work. The strike virtually brought the assembly of the Boeing 737 Max and 777 aircraft to a standstill.
Last strike in 2008
Boeing employees had accepted several zero rounds over the past decade and now wanted a significant increase. They rejected Boeing’s first offer with a 25 percent increase in income and the elimination of bonus payments by a majority of almost 95 percent. The union last went on strike in 2008. The strike lasted 57 days and cost the company about $2 billion, according to analyst estimates.
Boeing is in crisis
Boeing has been in crisis for years after a series of accidents. Recently, quality management came into even more focus after a fuselage fragment broke out while climbing on a nearly new Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 Max in January. Only due to fortunate circumstances, no one was seriously injured. Accident investigators concluded that the delivered aircraft was missing four fasteners on the fuselage section. Boeing was unable to provide documentation about the assembly work at the request of the authorities.
