A couple noticed an unpleasant smell in their own apartment on Wednesday night and alerted the Vienna fire brigade just in time. Shortly afterwards, the couple’s wife was unconscious.
The incident happened at Wielandplatz in Vienna-Favorit. The officials were able to detect a high concentration of CO with a carbon warning device as soon as they arrived and rescued the couple from the apartment. At the same time, officials evacuated and checked all adjacent apartments that were connected via the exhaust gas collector.
The reason was a mobile air conditioner
The reason for the extremely dangerous exhaust gases was a mobile air conditioner that created a negative pressure in the apartment, so that the exhaust gases from the gas boiler could not be discharged properly. The professional fire brigade had to use a powerful ventilation device to start the pressure ventilation in the whole apartment and also in the hallway in order to completely eliminate the CO concentration.
