Despite being legally acquitted almost fifty years ago, Styrian Walter Nickl was repeatedly wrongly accused of the murder of a postman. He recorded his dramatic story in a book. And: new research approaches raised the hope of finding the real perpetrator.
“I didn’t kill, please leave me alone!” That was the desperate message that Walter Nickl and his lawyer Gerald Ruhri sent via the “Krone” in April. About fifty years ago, as an 18-year-old, he stood before a jury. The public prosecutor at the time held him responsible for the robbery and murder of Knittelfeld’s postman. He was attacked and murdered on December 2, 1975 at the entrance to an apartment building on Schulgasse. 80,000 shillings were stolen from him. Walter Nickl sneaked out of the school and committed the crime unnoticed within a few minutes, after which he even changed clothes and went back to class.
