“Could have died” – Tourist films break glacier in Kyrgyzstan

Date:

Nearly a week after the glacier collapse in the South Tyrolean Dolomites, which killed 11 people, a similar incident took place in Kyrgyzstan. A British tourist filmed at Juuku Pass in the high mountains of Terskej-Alatau how a huge avalanche of ice and snow raged after a glacier broke off and eventually carried him away.

According to local media, two of the ten tourists – one American and nine British – suffered minor injuries in the incident, which took place on Friday. They had just reached the highest point of the guided mountain hike when he said goodbye to the group to take photos, Harry Shimmin told Kyrgyz news agency Akipress.

She took shelter behind a boulder
Although the avalanche of ice and snow stormed at him, he stopped behind a boulder, according to the Brit. “Behind the rock it was like being in a snow storm. When the avalanche came and it got dark, when it got hard to breathe, I realized I could die.”

Shimmin was extremely lucky. When it was over, he found himself covered by only a thin layer of snow and survived the whole thing unscathed, the Briton said. “I felt dizzy. I knew the rest of the group was further away from the avalanche than me, so it should be okay,” he said of the dramatic moments. “If we had gone five minutes further on our walk, we would all be dead.”
