The European Union wants to act against the illegal arms trade related to the war in Ukraine. EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said Monday at a meeting of European interior ministers in Prague that not all of Ukraine’s numerous weapons are “in the right hands”. Together with Ukraine and neighboring Moldova, the EU therefore wants to fight organized crime.
The border between Ukraine and Moldova is considered a possible gateway, as the acting director-general of the EU border protection agency Frontex, Aija Kalnaja, said in Prague: “Smuggled weapons can mainly arrive there,” she said.
Against human and drug trafficking
Members of a new support platform for Moldova’s border security were scheduled to meet in the Czech capital for the first time on Monday. In addition to the EU and Frontex, representatives of the Europol police authority should also participate in the meeting. It must also involve a joint approach to human and drug traffickers.
This is also the EU’s response to the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Even decades later, the Balkan countries are a hub for illegal weapons, emphasized Home Affairs Commissioner Johansson.
