After the murder of African-American Daunte Wright by a police officer, his family and the American city of Brooklyn Center have reached a settlement of $3.25 million. However, the agreement will only be perfect if there is also an agreement on important and important services outside of finance, Wright’s family’s lawyers said Tuesday (local time).
The city in the state of Minnesota is expected to agree to provide its police departments with additional training — for example, in de-escalation, dealing with subliminal bias, or behavior in mental crises. A permanent memorial to Wright is also to be erected.
Shot and killed at police checkpoint
Wright, 20, was shot dead in April 2021 by white cop Kim Potter during a police operation north of Minneapolis. He was stopped for a traffic stop because of abnormalities in his car. It turned out that he had issued a warrant for a gun crime, he tried to drive away and Potter shot him.
In subsequent court proceedings, she stated that she had accidentally drawn her pistol instead of a taser. Potter was sentenced to 16 months in prison and an additional eight months of supervised release for manslaughter in late 2021. The court followed the argument that it was a tragic mistake. Wright’s relatives had demanded a much harsher sentence.
