At least 920 people have died and hundreds have been injured by an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale that shook Afghanistan, the country’s authorities have confirmed.
Afghanistan’s deputy minister for disaster management, Sharafudin Muslim, said in a news conference that 920 people had been killed and 610 injured as a result of the earthquake.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck about 44 kilometers from the city Khost (east), near the border with Pakistan, at a depth of 51 kilometers.
In Barmala, Ziruk, Naka and Gayan districts, 255 people have been killed and 155 injured, all in Paktika province, the worst affected. Similarly, another 25 people have died and about 100 have died in Sapari district, Khost province. Local authorities have warned that the balance of the deceased may increase in the coming hours due to the large number of injured and the seriousness of the condition of some of them.
“Unfortunately, there was a massive earthquake last night in four districts of Paktika province, killing and injuring hundreds of our fellow citizens and destroying dozens of homes,” said Afghan government spokesman Bilal Karimi.
For his part, Taliban leader Hebatullah Ahundzadaha has asked for help “from the international community, charities and all humanitarian organizations helping the people of Afghanistan to cope with this great tragedy.”
Pakistani media have reported that a minor earthquake shook the capital Islamabad and other parts of the country.
