Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on his soldiers to hold their ground on the captured bridgehead in Russia’s Kursk region. Contrary to many reports that Russian forces are pushing the Ukrainians back there, Zelensky said: “We are holding our position and I thank every soldier for their courage.”
The president said he had discussed the situation with Commander-in-Chief Olexander Syrsky and Chief of the General Staff Anatoly Barhylevych.
“Kursk operation serves strategic purpose”
“We must not forget that the Kursk operation serves a strategic purpose. The war must return to the area where it started. This is the case when a buffer zone is created on the aggressor’s territory,” Zelensky said in his evening video message.
With the surprising advance at the beginning of August, Ukraine brought the ground war onto Russian territory for the first time.
The Kursk operation allowed Ukraine to take prisoners and exchange them for its own soldiers from Russian captivity, Zelensky explained. Fighting continued in the Kursk region, the Ukrainian General Staff said in its report on Monday evening.
