Ashton King, who witnessed the incident Monday with a friend at Navy Pier, a pier in Lake Michigan about a mile long, told the broadcaster he saw the boy floating on his back in the water — and a woman on the pier. he looked at the child and did nothing. When asked if the woman did anything to save the boy, King replied, “No, nothing, zero. It was the most bizarre thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.”

Police said the three-year-old was in the water for nearly 20 minutes before being rescued by helpers. The boy was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital and is said to be in critical condition. Local broadcaster WGN-TV reported that his heart stopped beating when rescuers fished him out of the water.
The child’s aunt, who watched the rescue operation impassively, was then taken away in a police car. In all likelihood, a complaint will be filed against the woman, who has since been interrogated.
