Political drama in Israel: According to media reports, a member of parliament from the ruling Yamina party surprisingly left the coalition. As a result, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s alliance has lost its wafer-thin majority in parliament, it said on Wednesday. Bennett’s new government was not sworn in until mid-June last year.
The protracted political crisis in Israel, with four elections within two years, came to an end for the time being. The coalition was supported by a total of eight parties from right to left – including an Arab party for the first time. But now there are problems.
Religious strife broke out
Coalition leader Idit Silman is said to have resigned over a dispute over religious matters. The issue was whether leavened food (chametz) could be taken to hospitals during the Jewish Passover. Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of a “brave decision” by Silman.
No immediate impact yet
Initially, however, the step will not have any concrete, immediate effects. Israel’s parliament is in session until May 8. Even after Silman’s resignation, the opposition does not have the necessary majority for a constructive vote of no confidence. It is still unclear whether the government will fall. Only then would new elections be necessary.
