Hurricane Oscar caused at least six deaths and severe damage in eastern Cuba. In Guantanamo province, entire areas are flooded and rescuers cannot reach affected areas, President Miguel Díaz-Canel said.
At least 1,000 homes were damaged, authorities said. In addition, the socialist-ruled Caribbean island of about ten million inhabitants was largely in darkness for the fourth night in a row.
Only a third of the power supply has been restored
On Friday, Cuba’s completely dilapidated electricity grid collapsed. According to the president, only a third of the country’s electricity supply has been restored so far. In the capital Havana, around 90 percent of the connections have been supplied with electricity again. Because the storm damage added to the emergency, Díaz-Canel canceled his planned participation in the summit of the so-called Brics states in the Russian city of Kazan.
Oscar hit Cuba as a hurricane over the weekend and was downgraded to a weaker tropical storm as it passed over the powerless island. As a result of the storm, heavy rains continue to occur in eastern Cuba and the southwestern Bahamas, according to the U.S. Hurricane Center.
