In Switzerland, the number of asylum applications is declining sharply. The authorities in our neighboring country are now closing a number of asylum centers.
The Swiss currently have a total of 36 temporary federal asylum centers, nine of which are expected to be closed by March. The reception capacity will therefore decrease by almost 20 percent, the State Secretariat for Migration announced on Tuesday.
Only every second place is taken
Since 2022, the number of places has been expanded to 10,500. However, only about half are currently occupied, it said.
In September, 40 percent fewer applications were submitted than in the same month last year. “The situation on the migration routes to Western Europe does not indicate a sudden increase in the coming months,” the State Secretariat said. If necessary, the number of places will be expanded again.
In total, almost 21,000 asylum applications had been submitted in Switzerland by the end of September.
Asylum applications are also decreasing in Austria
The situation is similar in Austria; there are also signs of a sharp decline in asylum applications for the whole of 2024. 18,816 applications have been submitted through September. That is more than 25,000 fewer than in the first nine months of 2023, which corresponds to a decrease of 57 percent. This is much stronger than in Europe as a whole, where figures fell by only eight percent.
