Mayor’s directive: fire chief is no longer allowed to work overtime

Date:

The case surrounding the temporary head of Klagenfurt’s professional fire brigade, which had already cost the city a lot of money due to extreme overwork, continues to cause a stir. Now even the mayor is taking action.

After the “Krone” report, Mayor Christian Scheider (Team Carinthia) even ordered an overtime stop for the fire brigade director. According to research by ‘Krone’, this would amount to a total of 110,000 euros – this has only now been denied after a new check by Scheider.

“The actual amount paid to Mr. Schifferl over a period of more than three years amounts to a gross amount of 55,000 euros.” The exact amount will probably only become apparent after a detailed investigation by experts. Günter Bauer, head of the State Audit Office, has already announced this

Inappropriate image due to overtime
The fact is that this somehow paints an inappropriate picture given the city’s current financial situation. Scheider was also informed by the human resources department in September about the extreme hours structure: “I have ordered that Schifferl is no longer allowed to work overtime from now on, and he was also informed of this in writing in a service instruction. I also pointed out that during his training, managerial duties should be transferred to his deputies.” Fire Director Schifferl will also take a vacation to prepare for his exam.

SPÖ and ÖVP also want clarification
The SP and VP of Klagenfurt are now also calling for a comprehensive clarification of this issue. That is why an urgent motion for a financial review of the entire professional fire brigade will be tabled during Wednesday’s city council meeting.

Understandably, most firefighters are upset about such excessive overtime. With them, every euro is turned over twice.
