A serious explosion accident caused horror in the Italian city of Bologna late Wednesday afternoon. The explosion, likely caused by a compressor, caused part of a Toyota Material Handling warehouse to collapse. Two workers were killed.
The accident occurred around 5:20 p.m. at the factory, which produces forklift trucks and employs about 850 people.
Although the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, it is understood that one worker died immediately and the second succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Maggiore Hospital.
A worker in critical condition
One man was seriously injured in the accident and remains in critical condition. Ten other injured people were treated at various clinics, but their condition is not life-threatening.
Large-scale deployment of rescue workers
Fire brigade, carabinieri, police and medical personnel were immediately on site to secure the situation. According to current information, it is not believed that there are any more people under the rubble, but the search is ongoing. The explosion was heard across much of the city and concerned family and colleagues gathered outside the factory gates.
Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore also visited the accident site and spoke of a new workplace tragedy shaking the region.
Just six months ago, a similar accident took place in Bologna, when seven technicians were killed at a hydroelectric power station in Suviana.
Strike announced
After the accident, the unions Fiom-Cgil, Fim-Cisl and Uilm-Uil called a strike in the metal sector on Friday to draw attention to safety in production. Their call: ‘Enough with the deaths at work.’ Gian Pietro Montanari of the Fiom-Cgil union said: “Toyota is not a bad employer, but we do have to check whether maintenance has been carried out properly.”
