Heartbeat finale: top doctor saved his patient from death

Date:

Last minute rescue! Through a complicated procedure, a top doctor from St. Pölten Hospital saved his patient from Purgstall (Lower Austria) from death.

“Although my patient Jasmin Kastner is only 37 years old, she already has a challenging medical history. Because as a baby she had to undergo two major operations at the Vienna General Hospital,” says Professor Dr. Dominik Wiedemann, clinical director of cardiac surgery in the capital of Lower Austria.

Rare organic fault
Little Jasmin was born with a “Truncus arteriosus communis”. In this rare organic defect, there is only one common exit from the heart and pulmonary artery – instead of two separate valves.

During the first procedure, a so-called conduit had to be installed. As a child, another operation was required to replace this artificial vascular prosthesis.

Even as a child, Jasmin proved she had a fighting heart. As a young woman, things gradually got worse – in desperation she eventually turned to senior physician Dr. Paul Vock from the Cardiology Department of the University Hospital in St. Pölten.

“I feel better from heartbeat to heartbeat.”
The doctor immediately recognized the dramatic situation and sent the patient to Primarius Dominik Wiedemann, who was trained by cardiac luminary Professor Günther Laufer.

“When she was introduced to me, she was marked,” the specialist recalls. He decided to perform the life-saving procedure. “I am indebted to the entire team. I always felt like I was in good hands. “I feel better from heartbeat to heartbeat,” says Jasmin Kastner gratefully.
