Teachers at the border – German problems: “We must break taboos”

Date:

It is a fatal mistake to talk about individual cases when violence breaks out, says the Viennese teachers’ union Thomas Krebs in a live lecture on krone.tv. “Each individual case is one too many, something like this should not happen.” Violence at school can be felt in different ways. Teachers would not only report physical or psychological violence. Attacks against teachers are also increasing in the digital space.

Krebs reports on a WhatsApp group of parents or students. “Posts on social media can really harm colleagues.” Legal violence is also being used more and more often. “It used to be absolutely unthinkable that a colleague would suddenly receive a letter from a lawyer the next day after a parent-teacher meeting.” It’s not like it used to be when people said they could work it out with the teacher it wasn’t enough, let’s get the school management involved. “The parents skip all the cases and a letter arrives from a lawyer.” Fortunately, most of it comes to nothing, says Krebs. “But you can imagine how a teacher feels who should have a relationship of trust with a child. And the parents communicate through a law firm.”

“You have to talk openly about problem areas”
Another problem area in schools is the lack of German language skills. This must start in kindergarten – even though this already exists in Vienna. “The existing offer is obviously not enough, otherwise we would not have this situation,” says Krebs. “I think it is very important that we break these taboos. You have to talk openly about the problem areas.” Cancer is annoying because it is always put in perspective and in balance. “This sentence is always coined that it works somehow. But that cannot be the solution.”
