A shipment of 13 tons of cocaine has been seized in Spain. Such a large quantity of this drug had never before been discovered and seized in the country, the newspaper “El País” reported, citing the national police.
Drug investigators from the Policía Nacional (the National Police) and the Spanish Customs Service managed the coup at the port of Algeciras in the province of Cádiz in southern Spain. One person has been arrested, other suspects are being sought.
Cocaine hidden in banana delivery
The drugs were said to be hidden on a ship in a shipment of bananas from Ecuador. The small South American country has become one of the largest cocaine exporting countries in recent years.
The now seized cargo was intended for a company in the eastern Spanish coastal city of Alicante. The investigation is ongoing, including searches.
According to the report, the previous record for the amount of cocaine seized in one go in Spain dates back to the summer of 2023 and was 9.5 tons. This seizure also took place at the time in the port of Algeciras.
The previous year, a total of 14 tonnes of cocaine were seized in Algeciras and a total of 64 tonnes in all Spanish ports. This highlights the importance of the latest attack, they said.
According to official information, the drugs, which are usually brought by ship from South America to the Iberian Peninsula, are then distributed throughout Europe.
