Investigation ongoing – sister stabbed: circumstances of the crime still unclear

Date:

Police and prosecutors continue to investigate the murder of a seven-year-old girl, allegedly by her older sister, in Leipzig. The 13-year-old is not criminally responsible, but the aim is to clarify the circumstances of the crime, a spokesperson for the Leipzig public prosecutor’s office said.

The girl was not physically injured and received psychological care at a specialized clinic, a police spokeswoman said.

Sister alerted the police after the incident
The spokeswoman did not provide information about the younger girl’s fatal injuries. However, an autopsy of the body was ordered. The spokeswoman does not want to say when this will happen and when the first results will be available. Both the Public Prosecution Service and the police spoke of a particularly tragic case.

Accordingly, the 13-year-old allegedly stabbed her younger sister on Friday evening when her parents were not in the house. The older woman is said to have alerted the police herself after the crime.

The seven-year-old boy died in hospital
When police officers arrived at the apartment complex in the Kleinzschocher district of Leipzig, they found the seriously injured child. The girl was taken to hospital where she died a short time later, according to police. A possible murder weapon with traces was seized. The police have so far not provided any information about which stabbing weapon was used.

When the parents were informed about the crime on Friday evening, a crisis intervention team was present, a police spokeswoman said. Such teams are intended to support family members of crime and accident victims in acute emergency situations.

Lower the age of criminal responsibility?
According to the German Criminal Code, anyone under the age of 14 at the time the crime is committed is incompetent. Recently, there has been repeated talk of lowering the age of criminal responsibility. The background also included particularly extreme cases in which children were regarded as perpetrators or suspects.

For example, in April a 13-year-old boy allegedly stabbed a man of no fixed abode in Dortmund. Many people also remembered a case in North Rhine-Westphalia: two girls, then aged twelve and thirteen, confessed to stabbing the student to death.

Even if they are not criminally liable, the Youth Care Office can take various measures for children under the age of 14. This is intended to prevent children from committing crimes again.
