Renowned Israeli television journalist Danny Kushmaro helped soldiers blow up a building in southern Lebanon, sparking sharp criticism from numerous professional colleagues.
The reporter from Channel 12 television station had accompanied ground troops during an operation. When a building from which shots were being fired into Israel was about to be blown up in a controlled manner, one of the soldiers handed the TV correspondent the firing mechanism. Then, on the soldiers’ instructions, he pulled the trigger.
In the heavily criticized report, Kushmaro said: “Before we leave, one last mission will be carried out.” Together with the soldiers, he counted down the countdown: “Four, three, two, one – pull the detonator.” , and that building exploded (see video in tweet below).
BBC correspondent Nafiseh Kohnavard criticizes her professional colleague in a tweet that also includes Kushmaro’s report:
In the distance you could see smoke rising from the explosion site. “A house with an ammunition depot, overlooking Israel, has been blown up – one less threat to the State of Israel,” Kushmaro said in front of the television camera.
“An Israeli ‘senior journalist’ from Israel’s Channel 12 blew up a house in southern Lebanon on camera. There is nothing more to add…,” BBC correspondent Nafiseh Kohnavard wrote on X (formerly Twitter) above the embedded Channel 12 video of the demolition.
“Shame on the profession of journalism”
The journalist’s colleagues in Israel also criticized his behavior on social media. One called it ‘a disgrace to the profession of journalism’. Another wrote: “His job is to report, not to blow up. If you want to fight, you have to put on a uniform.”
The TV correspondent also endangered other colleagues because their independence could be questioned, according to criticism from many colleagues. Neither the Israeli military nor the television station initially commented on the incident.
