Large-scale operation in Berlin – man flees from police, leaves explosives behind

A man with explosives sparked a major police operation in Berlin on Wednesday. The federal police wanted to check the man at the Neukölln S-Bahn station around 3:30 p.m., the police announced on X (formerly Twitter). However, he fled, leaving a bag behind.

They say there were explosives in the bag. Federal police took the explosive find to a nearby park, a spokeswoman said. Berlin police officers cordoned off the area late in the afternoon. In the evening, the find was blown up by experts. There was no danger to local residents. According to the spokeswoman, the man is being sought.

The police are also investigating suspicions of terrorism
According to the police, the background to the incident is still unclear. Research is being done in all directions. So far there is no evidence that a planned terrorist attack may have been foiled. Nevertheless, the state security service responsible for politically motivated actions was also called in by the State Criminal Investigation Department.

The bag was blown up on the spot
According to information from the “BZ”, the explosive found was a highly explosive substance. According to the police spokesperson, this needs to be investigated further. Due to the existing danger, the find was blown up in a nearby park in the evening around 7:50 PM.

According to the newspaper “BZ”, firefighters dug several holes to inflate the suspect substances in a controlled manner. The explosion could be heard hundreds of meters away, the newspaper wrote.
