Dramatic incident on Thursday evening in St. Georgen an der Stiefing: A 36-year-old allegedly threatened two children with a knife and then set fire to a residential building. The boy and girl, who were home alone, were able to escape to a friend’s house with minor injuries.
The 36-year-old Hungarian has been living in a room in a house with a Hungarian family for several weeks. For motives that have not yet been clearly explained, the man allegedly threatened two of the family’s children (the girl is nine, the boy is eleven) with a knife around 6 p.m. on Thursday. The children, who were home alone, were able to escape to a friend’s house with minor injuries.
First threatened, then set on fire
According to police, the suspect then set fire to his host family’s nursery – and tried to escape to Graz by public transport. He was arrested by police at Wildon train station. The suspected murder knife was recovered from the suspect.
A neighbor noticed the fire and called the fire brigade. Despite rapid firefighting efforts, significant material damage could not be prevented (the exact extent of the damage is still being investigated). Officials from the Styrian State Police began the investigation. Working with an expert, it was clearly determined that the cause of the fire was subjectively set on fire.
Suspect admitted to Jakomini prison
The 36-year-old suspect admitted that he had started the fire. The suspect did not want to say anything about the motive. He simply stated that he was significantly intoxicated. The man is taken to Jakomini prison on the orders of the Graz Public Prosecutor’s Office. More studies will follow.
