Parents are increasingly exposed in psychotherapy by their adult children. The well-known German psychoanalyst Wolfgang Schmidbauer even speaks of a ‘demonization of parents as mass sport’. What he thinks is going wrong.
Everywhere in everyday life we encounter psychology as the science of our experiences and our behavior. But today the language of therapy is used in an inflationary way. If your partner doesn’t do the dishes, you feel ‘triggered’. Basically, being “triggered” means that after a traumatic experience, people feel like they are being taken back to the terrible emotional state caused by a trigger. Friends say they are “traumatized” or stuck in “toxic relationships.” If you follow social media, it appears that one in two people are narcissistic or “neurodivergent.”
