It will be decided in the US on Tuesday whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will move into the White House. The actual vote then lies with the electoral college, which consists of 538 voters from the American states (see video above).
Whoever receives at least 270 of these votes becomes president. In the extremely unlikely event that both Trump and Harris receive exactly 269 votes, the US Constitution contains provisions. The US House of Representatives is then responsible for the decision. The Republicans around Trump currently have an advantage there. They control 26 so-called delegations, the Democrats around Harris control only 22.
However, the seats will also be re-elected on Tuesday. Analyzes assume that the Trump camp will have an even bigger lead.
A similar process for vice president
If the votes are tied, a similar process would decide who becomes vice president. The US Senate, which consists of 100 people, is responsible for this matter. Whoever gets 51 votes wins. Theoretically, it would be possible for the president and vice president to belong to different parties. Democrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance are nominated for vice president.
Such a scenario has only happened once before in the office. In 1824, none of the four candidates won a majority; the US House of Representatives then had to decide between the three best-placed candidates.
