After several cases of monkey pox have already occurred in some European countries and also in Austria, there has been a first suspicion in Tyrol since Thursday. A result of the test should be available in the coming days.
As the state of Tyrol announced, the first concrete suspected case of monkeypox infection was confirmed on Thursday. This was detected using a smallpox PCR test sample. The sample is sent to the virology department in Vienna for confirmation of the findings through a special examination. If the infection is detected, the case is considered confirmed.
Infection only with symptoms
A result is expected in the coming days. “The affected person, who has symptoms, was admitted to a remote area at the Innsbruck clinic for treatment and further examination,” said health director Theresa Geley. Infection is only possible if symptoms appear. No contacts were registered during the surveys.
