Thousands of people were evacuated after the eruption of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on Flores. The government instructed rescuers to get residents of risk areas to safety as quickly as possible, as saving lives was the top priority. The death toll was adjusted to nine.
The eruption, which started Monday evening, threw ash and glowing rock for miles. These rocks fell on seven nearby villages, causing fires and serious damage.
Ten thousand people affected
Many residents were buried under the rubble and dozens were injured. The entire region is covered in a layer of ash. More than 10,000 people have been affected.
Lack of medicine and food
Urgent relief supplies such as medical supplies and food are being sent to affected areas, although difficult terrain and ash make access difficult. About 2,400 people have already found shelter in evacuation centers in neighboring villages, often with nothing but their clothes on.
The volcano continues to spew ash
Authorities are urging residents to maintain a safety radius of seven kilometers and beware of volcanic mudslides. Wearing masks is also recommended to avoid respiratory problems caused by the volcanic ash.
Flores, a popular tourist island in the Lesser Sunda Islands, is often affected by volcanic activity. Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on Earth. The Lewotobi Laki-Laki has been active repeatedly since late 2023 and has also been emitting ash in recent months.
