Man seriously injured – driver of camper in flames at gas station

Terrible accident early Wednesday evening in Strass in the Tyrolean Zillertal. At a gas station, the driver of a camper came into contact with a large amount of gasoline. Suddenly the fuel ignited and the man (57) and his vehicle caught fire.

According to the first reports, the 57-year-old German was on his way from the Zillertal around 5 p.m. However, his camper’s fuel pump was not working. According to the police, the driver manually overrides the function. He wanted to replace the temporary device at a gas station in Strass.

The steering wheel and camper caught fire
This is what happened: While operating the vehicle, the driver poured a large amount of gasoline on himself. Fuel also flowed over the camper. “When the device was tampered with, the gasoline ignited and both the steering wheel and the luggage compartment of the camper caught fire,” police said.

Witness responded with presence of mind
A 42-year-old who was at the gas station saw the burning man and vehicle and responded quickly. The witness grabbed the fire extinguisher from the gas station and was able to contain the flames. By acting quickly, the 42-year-old also prevented petrol cans from igniting at the petrol pump.

Despite the quick response, the German suffered serious burns. After initial treatment, the seriously injured man was taken to the clinic in Innsbruck. There was significant damage to the mobile home.
