Conflict Barometer – This is how many wars are currently being fought around the world

Date:

Conflict researchers have recorded an increase in conflicts in the past year. A total of 369 conflicts were registered, ten more than the year before, and the number of wars rose by two to 22, the Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research announced on Thursday.

For example, conflicts in Israel with the Palestinians and the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah have escalated into wars. According to the Conflict Barometer 2023, six wars have de-escalated, while fourteen wars continue.

The majority of conflicts take place at the domestic level
The most common conflicts were intrastate conflicts (252 conflicts), followed by interstate conflicts (58 conflicts). The conflicts usually revolved around ideologies or systems, followed by resources.

Most wars rage in the sub-Saharan part of Africa
Just like last year, Sub-Saharan Africa – the southern part of Africa – was the region with the most wars, the researchers wrote. A total of 13 wars were observed there.

The number of wars in Europe has doubled
In Europe, the number of wars has increased from one to two: in addition to the war between Russia and Ukraine, the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region has escalated into a war.

The Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research was founded in 1990 and aims to record conflict events worldwide as accurately as possible and to provide datasets for further analysis of the causes of conflict.
