The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of an Upper Austrian man were mysterious: on the way home with his wife on Wednesday, the 49-year-old reportedly stopped not far from his home in Grein an der Donau and took a bathroom break. Now the sad certainty: the man’s body was found on the bank of the Danube.
The couple, from St. Nikola an der Donau, drove their car towards home on the B3 (Donau Bundesstraße) early on Wednesday evening. At Grein’s level, the 49-year-old apparently felt an urgent human need.
Around 6 p.m., he stopped his car, even though it was only about two and a half kilometers from his house, and immediately after leaving the city, parked next to the Danube – at the level of the so-called Halter Cross.
The woman (48) remained in the car with the engine running. She had a headache and sat back with her eyes closed, not noticing what happened next. At that time it was already pitch dark.
Maybe fell into the Danube
When the 49-year-old had still not returned after some time, the woman independently started looking for him, first on the banks of the Danube and then in the Grein area. Because that unfortunately did not work, she raised the alarm around 7 p.m. There was a suspicion that the man may have fallen into the Danube.
A search was launched with emergency services from the shipping authority, fire brigade, police, Red Cross and the Austrian rescue dog brigade. Drones, boats and dogs were used for hours to try to locate the missing person.
Due to the dense fog, a helicopter operation was not possible. The search was finally called off after midnight and resumed on Thursday. Now the sad certainty: the body of the 49-year-old from Mühlviertler was found washed up on the bank of the Danube on the Lower Austrian side.
How the accident could have happened and whether there was any possible foul play is currently being investigated.
