The police in Amsterdam use a special method to solve an unsolved murder case after fifteen years. A life-size hologram of sex worker Bernadett ‘Betty’ Szabo, who was murdered in 2009, should motivate the public to help.
The visualization shows the then 19-year-old sitting in a shop window in the red light district, asking passersby for help by first knocking on the shop window and then breathing on it. The word “Help” was created. A yellow police tape indicates that it is a cold case and that assistance is requested.
Brutally murdered
‘Betty’ was brutally murdered with multiple stab wounds at her workplace in February 2009, three months after the birth of her son. Two colleagues later found her dead in a pool of blood on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal. Despite extensive investigation with video analyzes and witness interviews, the perpetrator has not yet been identified.
Emotionally moving
The Amsterdam police now hope that Ms Szabo’s powerful image will touch people emotionally and prompt them to remember potentially important information. “We believe that someone knows more about the case and that the hologram can help make a connection,” said a police spokesperson.
With this innovative measure, the police are making a last attempt to solve the case. It is the first time that the Amsterdam police has used a hologram to support investigations.
