There is fear in the forest – record year for mushrooms: now the plunderers are coming

Date:

Chanterelles, porcini mushrooms, birch mushrooms and mushrooms, as well as parasols, germinate as they have not done for a long time! In addition to lucky ones, our own searchers also plunder the local forests…

Everything with size and purpose. Certain rules must be observed to collect the ‘forest fruits’ in harmony with the forest ecosystem. Then there is nothing wrong with searching,” says Konrad Mylius, Chairman of the Main Association of Austrian Agricultural and Forestry Companies. But his appeal has fallen on deaf ears, especially this year.

Because right now, the decade-long mushroom year (with countless sprouts) is inviting people to loot things. “Cherry chanterelles and other edible tubers are dragged through the bags.

“We are not even talking about the eastern gangs or the squads from Italy who literally shave the forest floor of the landowners for commercial and criminal purposes, but also about the hundreds of private searchers who swarm,” says Viennese environmental legend Dr. . Gerhard Heilingbrunner, who has his roots in the Yspertal (Lower Austria), which is currently also rich in porcini mushrooms, and eco-veteran Helmut Belanyecz.

They ask all the “lucky ones” to adhere to basic ecological rules: “Never tear them up, but always cut them carefully, clean them roughly and leave the remains in the forest. Only in this way can new fungal threads, the so-called mycelium, form!” In this way, supplies are secured for future generations.

“It is especially bad when, as is now the case, searchers plunder entire forest areas in a concentrated manner. This leads to permanent disruption of the valuable forest ecosystem. Parasol, as well as poisonous creatures, are part of the green tree and should not be eradicated,” Mylius warns.

Protection status for mushrooms required
Collecting mushrooms is not allowed everywhere. Forest owners can prohibit grazing in certain regions. There is a risk of high fines.

But whether they are fungi, molds or yeasts, without them there would be no life on Earth as we know it. That is why Chile and Great Britain called for legal protection status for fungi at the UN biodiversity conference COP16 in Colombia.
