Long-awaited and ultimately even better attended than expected: a Harry Potter service took place on Sunday morning in the Protestant Church of the Savior in Graz. Pastor Marcus Hütter preached in a Dumbledore costume.
How do you get young people to church? A question that concerns Protestant and Catholic preachers. One person is particularly creative in his approach: Marcus Hütter, pastor responsible for the Protestant Church of the Savior in Graz-Liebenau.
He made headlines this week with his idea for a Harry Potter tableware. The time had come on Sunday at 10 a.m.: “We expected a lot of interest, but we were surprised that so many people came,” says the pastor.
“We had to turn away 60 to 70 people because the church was full. Still, about thirty of them remained standing outside, waiting. We stood together and talked until 3 p.m.”
The team is “grateful and happy” about the many interested parties, not only young people, but from all generations: “There were a lot of children sitting at the front and were enthusiastic.”
And how did JK Rowling’s book influence the theater sermon with 15 actors? ‘It was about Dumbledore’s question whether it would not be better to abolish the Hogwarts houses. The teachers then argue that it is better to remain a unity in a reconciled diversity.”
The next date has already been set
Due to high demand, the Church of the Redeemer team is already planning the next “magical” service: “On February 9, there will be one called ‘The Room of Blessing’.”
