Kayak ace Mario Leitner is known for his extreme adventures around the world. In Pakistan, the 27-year-old Olympian from Rio 2016 reached his limits. “I was completely at the mercy of the water and almost died,” he reflects in an interview with “Krone”. But a day later he was back in the canoe – and has long had his sights set on the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
This year in May, a colleague of Carinthian kayaking CEO Mario Leitner drowned while paddling. Shortly afterwards the man from Glanegg won silver at the European Championships and dedicated the medal to his late friend. Less than two weeks ago, Leitner himself escaped death. “It was brutally close. I have to process this mentally first. Even though I love such extremes and know that the danger is always there – that was too much,” says the 27-year-old.
