Disappeared in Rohr – Cat injured firefighter during rescue operation

Date:

Ouch! Her love for animals cost a firefighter in Kremsmünster (Upper Austria) dearly: during the rescue, despite wearing gloves, she was bitten so badly by the animal that she had to be taken to hospital. The injured cat hid in a pipe system but was rescued.

The operation started when an attentive driver discovered a clearly injured tomcat on the side of the road, animal paradise Schabenreith explains. When the driver tried to help the animal, the cat ended up in a sewer shaft about two meters deep, with 60 meters of pipes running in different directions.

Difficult to use
The driver immediately alerted the rescue team from the Schabenreith animal paradise, which arrived on the scene 20 minutes later. After a lengthy search, the team was able to locate the animal in the extensive pipe system, but quickly realized that they could not safely rescue the tomcat without additional help.

The rescue operation lasted an hour and a half
The animal rescue team received valuable support from the Krühub volunteer fire brigade through the fire brigade’s emergency call. After an hour and a half of joint effort – using fire hoses, nets and other aids – a fellow firefighter managed to reach the cat and grab it.

Taken to hospital
During the rescue, despite wearing gloves, she was bitten so badly by the animal that she subsequently had to be taken to hospital for medical treatment. But emergency services held out until the animal rescue team was able to take control of the injured cat and take him to emergency veterinary care.

Seriously injured domestic cat
The cat, who is not neutered or microchipped, has serious joint and back injuries, but he will survive. The animal paradise Schabenreith hopes that he will get better soon.
