Two explosions rocked the Brasilia government district on Tuesday evening (local time). The Supreme Court had to be evacuated; one man was killed in the attack.
Only one death was initially reported; local media published images suggesting explosions outside the Supreme Court. The police and fire brigade eventually confirmed that explosions had occurred.
The attacker wanted to break into the Supreme Court
A man is said to have tried to break into the Supreme Court, Federal District Governor Celina Leão said. However, the previously unknown person could not do this. His body was discovered in the square opposite the courthouse.
Authorities said the first explosion occurred in a parking lot next to the courthouse. An explosive went off in the trunk of a parked car. There is currently no information about the second explosion, which also took place in Three Powers Square – police are said to be investigating.
The executive cordoned off the government district. Judges and station staff were taken to safety after the incident. A spokesman for Brazil’s president said Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was not in the adjacent presidential palace during the explosions.
Attacker could be Bolsonaro supporter
The Supreme Court has received several threats in the past – often from right-wing extremist groups or supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro. It is therefore suspected that the attacker could come from this area. “The police will investigate quickly and thoroughly. We want to know the motive for the attacks and restore peace and security as quickly as possible,” Attorney General Jorge Messias promised on X.
