The Thurston County Office in Washington state proudly released a video of officers stopping a fleeing suspect’s car with a net. The driver was caught – but there is also criticism of the use of the ‘grappler’.
Pursuits on public roads pose a danger to bystanders. That’s why hundreds of fatal accidents happen in the US every year.
The getaway car almost crashed into oncoming traffic
The incident in Washington also makes a risky impression: when the suspect in Washington flees from the police at high speed, they stop the driver by using the ‘grappler’ to catch him like a lasso. The car leaves the road, crashes first through a fence and then into a tree. The driver initially manages to escape, but is later arrested by the police. The video also shows an oncoming vehicle that the getaway car, which had already started to skid, almost collided with.
“Grappler” has already led to deaths
However, the spectacular shots do not impress all viewers. Videos showing the ‘grappler’ in action have become a real trend on social media. However, there are also reports that the device has caused accidents that killed or injured people.
Here you can see how the “Grappler” works:
Three years ago, a terrible tragedy occurred with the device at the border in southern Arizona. When police tried to stop an SUV carrying the ‘Grappler’, it crashed into oncoming traffic, crashed into a truck and burst into flames. Eleven people in the crowded car were killed or seriously injured. In another case in Wilton, North Dakota, the device caused a police car to overturn and the suspect was initially able to escape on foot.
The ministry recommends a softer approach
The Ministry of Justice also recommends a softer approach to car chases. It is more likely that suspects will be tracked down using drones or helicopters. It would be better to identify and capture refugees later using license plates or other means.
