The Czech Republic wants to ban the sale and serving of energy drinks to children under the age of 15. Similar bans with different age limits currently exist in Poland, the Baltic countries, Sweden and Norway. There are no age restrictions on sales in Austria and Germany.
A general ban on the sale of energy drinks in schools, health institutions and children’s homes is planned. Energy drinks have been very popular in the Czech Republic for years and are intensively marketed. They often contain large amounts of sugar and caffeine.
Protection against stimulants
The aim is to protect children’s health from the unwanted effects of various stimulants, Agriculture Minister Marek Vyborny explained. The two parliamentary chambers in Prague still have to approve the proposal. But the coalition has a clear majority.
“Nonsense restriction”
The Czech Association of Manufacturers of Non-Alcoholic Beverages criticized the decision. Chairman Michal Dyttert spoke of a “senseless restriction of entrepreneurial freedom”, which in practice would also mean a ban on sales at drinks machines. Instead of restrictions, one should focus on education.
